Non Toxic Movement
Updated: Dec 18, 2021
In 2019 I began a mission to research and test healthier alternatives in cleaning, beauty and kitchen products. I have come across so many products that personally worked for me so I have finally put together a starter list of non-toxic alternatives. Let me just say that this is not a comprehensive list and I will continue testing out new products to share with y'all as I come across them.
It seems like there is a big shift going on in the United States currently and I have to imagine it's because we are demanding healthier products for our families. We need to do research and educate ourselves on these harmful chemicals that we are allowing into our homes. Two apps that have helped me clean up my home are the Healthy Living - EWG verified app and the Think Dirty app. This is a wonderful way to figure out how "clean" your products are if y'all are just starting out.
Cleaning:
Dr. Bronner's Baby Unscented Castile Soap - it's such a versatile product and rated a 1 on the EWG scale.
Vinegar
BlueLand Eco-Friendly Cleaning Products - it's a new company that Sean and I came across one night on Shark Tank.
Seventh Generation Laundry Stain Remover - it's rated a 2 on the Think Dirty app (Update: this company is Greenwashed now)
Seventh Generation Laundry Powder Free & Clear - I had never used a powdered laundry soap, but I decided to purchase it since it comes in a cardboard box instead of a big plastic container. I have been using it for about a month now and I have to say, it has worked well for me.
Seventh Generation Free and Gentle Laundry Soap - Rated 2 on Think Dirty app.
Puracy Foaming Hand Soap Lavender & Vanilla - Rated 1 on the EWG scale.
Everyone Hand Soap Lavender Coconut - EWG verified.
Everyone Hand Sanitizer Spray Peppermint Citrus - EWG verified.
Dr. Bronner's Organic Hand Sanitizer Lavender - Rated 0 on the Think Dirty app.
Now, most of these products come in plastic containers, I think that's why I've been recently drawn to the BlueLand cleaning products because they come in "forever bottles" and you pay for the refills. The whole company is very eco-friendly so this is a great option if you don't already have glass reusable bottles. I used to use mason jars for my cleaning supplies with a spray lid attachment.
Kitchen:
Pyrex Glass Tupperware Containers - Sean and I were fortunate to register for these for our wedding. We knew we wanted containers that we would be able to take directly from the fridge to the microwave.
Stasher Bags - these are silicone alternatives for your plastic ziplock bags.
BKR Bottles - Sean has been using Dasani bottled water since he was a young boy. His family always bought plastic water bottles. He would use one and refill it during the day, but we finally came to a point where I decided his health would be much better served if he wasn't ingesting so much plastic daily. His only caveat was that whatever glass or stainless steel water bottle I bought for him had to have the same top as a plastic one (smaller opening). I came across BKR when searching on the Liketoknowit.com app for "glass water bottles". The mouth of their bottle replicates that of a plastic one and Sean was hooked. He couldn't believe how much better the water tasted coming out of a glass bottle. He now has requested a few more for Christmas! (I for one, am happy to spend the money knowing that he isn't consuming plastic when he drinks).
Sean and I are currently use our Le Creuset cast iron most days, but Lodge has a cheaper alternative and is just as good.
Beauty:
BareMinerals Prime Time Foundation Primer - Rated 2 on the Think Dirty app and 1 on the EWG scale.
BareMinerals BARESKIN Complete Coverage Concealer - Rated 2 on the EWG scale.
Tarte Amazonian Clay Waterproof Brow Mousse - Rated 2 on the EWG scale.
BareMinerals Mineral Veil Setting Powder - Rated 1 on EWG scale.
BareMinerals Lash Domination Volumizing Mascara - Rated 2 on EWG scale. It is a decent mascara, obviously there are better out there, but I haven't found a better (Healthier) alternative.
Osea Advanced Protection Cream - Non-toxic, vegan and organic. People love this product, however, my skin didn't like it very much.
Rose Mira Clearing Toner - there's no rating for this product, but it is an organic company and they pride themselves on using no additives, alcohol, and no preservatives. (this is easily one of my all time favorite products)!
All Good Lip Balm - this is literally my holy grail product. I love how soft the product is and knowing that anything we put on our lips gets ingested I feel good about the ingredients.
Juice Beauty Stem Cellular 2-in-1 Cleanser - I used to use Cetaphil, but I just needed a cleaner product. This Juice beauty cleanser is my second holy grail product.
Beauty Counter Shampoo/Conditioner - I loved this duo. Unfortunately, Sean had an allergic reaction to the shampoo so I'm not able to use it anymore, but it's a product I would highly recommend.
PureZero Biotin Shampoo - this is the new shampoo I have currently been trying out this past month. So far Sean and I are really liking it. I store my shampoo, conditioner and face wash in glass bottles that I got from Etsy. Sean was sure he was going to break them, but it's a pump so as long as he doesn't pick it up it should be fine. (UPDATE: I looked into this product more and have decided to switch away from using it due to the "Fragrance" ingredient).
Seventh Generation Organic Cotton Pads - I hate how companies don't have to disclose the ingredients for their feminine hygiene products. I will now only buy organic cotton products for such a sensitive area. I will note that these pads are pretty thin.
Aztec Secret Indian Healing Clay - I've been using this as an armpit detox (mixed with Apple Cider Vinegar). I have also been using it as a facemark (mixed with water) and have been absolutely loving it! I apply it to my face two times a week for 10 minutes.

I hope this gives you a good start as you embark on this journey. I would love to hear your recommendations and I will continue to update y'all on new products as I come across them! As I mentioned this past Summer, a great place to start is by ordering a Ox Box from the Skincareox.com. They do so much research and find organic and non-toxic products for y'all to try out! I have found some of my favorite beauty products from this box (Juice Beauty Cleanser and Rose Mira Clearing Toner) and I will continue to go to their blogs as a resource in my journey.
Sincerely,
KateAnn
